There are still a lot of things that can be done with guitars and
songs that haven't been attempted before.
Don't let people who make music only with computers tell you different.
The 3Ds, Flying Nun's foremost exponents of taking guitars and pop
songs into wonderful uncharted sonic territory, are back with a
new single. Time to turn it up.
Dust is penned by the group's resident Outer Space-head,
Dave Saunders. Rollicking along like previous Saunders single classics,
Hey Seuss and Outer Space,
this one rides some shambolic riffing on the theme of karmic pop
that all makes perfect non-sense. Dave stars alongside some muppets
in the Dust video that he and drummer Dom made on their home
computers (see, they're good for something!). Anyway, "Dust'
is the proverbial business and it appears on the 3Ds' third album,
Strange News From The Angels, which is heading our way in
August.
Meanwhile, digging further into the "Dust" single reveals
three extra non-album tracks worthy of your attention. Dave Mitchell
tears out a brilliant acoustic version of album track "Animal",
one of those signature Mitchell songs that manage to glue a hefty
riff and a niftily nagging piece of note-picking together with a
beautiful vocal lament into something compelling.
That's followed by "Fallen Angel", a practice room recording
with lead vocal by Denise Roughan and the Daves' guitars indulging
in joyous wig-out assault.
Last up is another Dave Mitchell solo workout, this time picking
up his electric guitar for "Strange News From The Angels"
(a song which will not appear on the album of the same name! Confused
yet?). The guitar action on this five and a half minute piece of
electro-D-mentia was recorded in a single take Ñ you can even hear
the moment where Dave's guitar-strap falls off and he falls to his
knees, playing on...
That's the kind of attitude it takes. Some talent too. Lucky the
3Ds have all that and more and it all comes out as Strange News
From Angel Dust. Scary and fantastic.
