Genius
in the form of a true Pop Anthem announces itself the instant that
it hits the deck -- like this. Screaming "I can't see in the
dark and I'm holding onto you'", The 3Ds' "Hey Seuss"
lands, already running, on a memorable guitar riff that simply sucks
in all the guitar skronk that this great Dunedin band can throw at
it in less than two-and-a half perfect minutes.
Wearing the kind of
wicked smile befitting a group who sing songs about people like the wonderful Doctor
Seuss, the 3Ds are chaotic pop leaders of a new generation of bands from New Zealand's
Flying Nun label.
This quartet's songsmithery may include the melodic snse of countrymen The Bats,
Jean-Paul Sartre Experience et al, but they turn that upside down, straight into insistent
guitar hookery. Here's a brand of kiwi noise that's a new type of fun.
"Hey Seuss" is a blast of D-mentia taken from the forthcoming album The Venus
Trail. This single also features the epic guitar tangle of "Man On The Verge Of
Nervous Breakdown" (another song on show from the album) and a newly recorded bonus
track, "River Burial".
"Hey Seuss" is released worldwide by Flying Nun this month. The single has
already featured on Melody Maker's "Maker Hit List" of ten favourite advance
cassettes. The Venus Trail sees Australian release on April 4.
In other news around the 3rd Dimension, there's already been international acclaim for
The Venus Trail. Spin previewed the album as the group's finest moment, confirming their
status as "the world's premier noisy pop band". And this week in the UK, Select
awarded The Venus Trail four stars, calling the 3Ds "pretty much timeless -- it's
impossible to tag their guitar-agitated brew with any musical epoch from the past
decade."
The 3Ds leave New Zealand in April, aiming to follow those reviews with a dose of live
mayhem. They pass through Sydney and Melbourne, where they were last seen playing with the
Lemonheads in January, before heading to London for gigs and a Peel Session. In May, The
3Ds tour America with Pavement and Superchunk before returning to Europe for another tour.
If the rest of the world hasn't woken up to the 3Ds supersonic pop by then,
well there's definitely somthing wrong with ther coffee up there.
