Blue Cheese picks up on the rough disaffection of his earlier demo collection, A Pebble and a Paper Crane, which he recorded in a WWII bomb shelter in Germany. Back in his hometown of Dunedin, New Zealand, Strang spent two curious months alone, housesitting for his parents. Re-nested, yet still isolated, Strang composed all of Blue Cheese over those quiet days. Lead-off track The Web channels pummeling bass lines punctuated by a twinkling synth that calls upon microscopic pop principalities of restlessness. Its abrupt ending parallels Strangs own disconnect. Shes Appealing weaves Day-Glo guitar motifs into distant, detached 80s garage pop vocals. Never Kissed a Blonde is driven by a slapping delay on both vocals and guitar. Strangs path toward a melody is always surprising, and he never misses a hit-on-the-head-obvious-in-retrospect memorable line.

Tracklisting

The Web

Things Are Never Simple

Full Moon Hungry Sun

Run Rings

What's Wrong?

The Canyon Her River Carved

It's Fine

You Think

She's Appealing

Never Missed A Blonde

Scarlet King Magno

FN561 Ghost Wave - Radio Norfolk (2016)

New Zealand's Ghost Wave return with their sophomore album Radio Norfolk.

Following on from 2013s Ages the groups latest sees the duo explore deeper into their psychedelic sound, while adding a more electronic focus to their sunny warped songs that mix the sound of Flying Nun bands of the 80s, the British explosion of the 60s and the wayfaring dubs of Lee "Scratch" Perry. While their sound is undeniably tinged with darkness, it isn't gloomy or depressing. This impression is mostly due to Matt Berninger's deep baritone, which brings to mind such sensitive, but manly Brit vocalists as Scott Walker and Stuart Staples of the Tindersticks. The National, however, are American. Formed in Brooklyn in 1999, the quintet hails from Cincinatti and doesn't sound much like a New York Band (Interpol, the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc.). Instead, they could be Midwestern or even Canadian in the way they combine alt-country, chamber-pop, and post-punk angst, like Toronto's Royal City or Montreal's Arcade Fire. Often compared to Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits, the National's music is actually faster-paced and has a lighter, almost jaunty touch.
