It's not a long list, but somewhere on it belongs \u003cstrong\u003eBoards of Canada's Music Has the Right to Children\u003c\/strong\u003e - the greatest psychedelic album of the ’90s.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYou aren't likely to hear more subtly effective layering of sounds on any electronic record in the last 20 years:\u003cstrong\u003e Music Has the Right to Children\u003c\/strong\u003e is as unified and complete they come. Here, \u003cstrong\u003eBoards of Canada\u003c\/strong\u003e set their sights on a small set of moods and characteristics-- innocence, apprehension, wonder, mystery - and probed every possibility in minute detail.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBoC\u003c\/strong\u003e created a hazy sound of smeared digital synth-tones and analog-decayed production to give their music a wavering, mottled quality redolent of formats like film, vinyl, and magnetic tape that are susceptible to decay and distortion with the passage of time. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd all of this carried by patient, sleepwalking beats, and aching with nostalgia, with the front cover a faded photograph of a family of seven on vacation, their faces eerily bleached into featureless blanks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs their discography unfolded over the ensuing 20 years, \u003cstrong\u003eSandison and Eoin\u003c\/strong\u003e first intensified their approach with \u003cstrong\u003eIn a Beautiful Place Out in the Country EP\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eGeogaddi,\u003c\/strong\u003e then inflected it with the shoegaze-tinged \u003cstrong\u003eThe Campfire Headphase\u003c\/strong\u003e, and finally simply reiterated it with \u003cstrong\u003eTomorrow’s Harvest.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut then the idea of \u003cstrong\u003eBoards of Canada\u003c\/strong\u003e “progressing” or “evolving” goes against their very essence. Their intent with \u003cstrong\u003eMusic Has the Right to Children\u003c\/strong\u003e was to create a haunted haven outside the onward flow of Time.
