'Smoking Weed / Kissing Dudes' is the second buzzed-out track from Bored Housewives Club's upcoming E.P A MILF in Sheep's Clothing. The band, made up of Te Whanganui-a-Tara duo Alayne Dick and Aaron Pyke, seem to have a knack for catchy hooks and tongue-and-cheek lyrics. Seriously, 10/10 for catchy hook. I might get asked to work from home more often if I keep singing it. Naturally, I was curious about this song that had so quickly claimed prime real estate in my head.
“So I’ve got two main interests in life, and that’s what the song’s about", Aaron says.
"The song is about Aaron's experiences in in the queer male dating scene, specifically about a time he was hooking up with a dude and, mid hook-up, he noticed the guy’s wedding ring. The song also references two queer spots around Wellington, Ivy bar and Checkmate (a gay sauna which sadly closed due to COVID-19).
The song has been paired with a very clever homemade video put together by Aaron.
"We’re a small band, and very much having to take a DIY approach whenever possible. For this video, those restrictions ended up pushing us to make something a bit out of the box. Aaron’s recently gotten into becoming a design boy, so he had the idea to make the book for the video. Alayne then set-up a haphazard filming set-up; which included her phone attached to a selfie stick, taped to a broom (taped to the table) and a whatever lamps she could find at her flat. The band’s favourite part of the music video is probably the wolf, inspired by the chorus’ iconic “wooo’s” which are always a crowd favourite when played live."
Like previously with the first single from this EP, Pink Depression, the band’s fuzzy, DIY sound has been recorded/mixed by Joel Cosgrove and mastered by Oli Devlin.

“From a craft perspective, I’m not like a good drawer, but there’s like a charm to what I do. Much like my guitaring, I’m not Steve Vai, but it’s got its own charm to it." - Aaron Pyke
