Riiki Reid (previously Riiki) has been teasing a new epoch in her musical career since February. On March 1st, she shared a new song, Meet U Again, paired with a music video directed and produced by Robyn Jordaan with art direction from Franca Chase. The song, written and produced by Riiki Reid (Raquel Abolins-Reid), is a masterful combination of indie pop and R&B, with an instantly-addictive hook that feels like flying. It is thrilling, yet encapsulates a curious feeling of nostalgia. When speaking about the song, she says:
“I hate when things don’t feel the same, and all I want is that tingly and exciting feeling when you first met. The song is about longing for that, picturing yourself getting to meet each other all over again because it felt so good, fresh and exciting.”
The music video, inspired by one of her favourite 90’s cult films Run Lola Run, sees Riiki Reid sprinting through empty buildings, shooting alert glances over her shoulder and locking eyes with strangers on escalators. There is a beautiful juxtaposition between city and sea throughout as she finds her way to the ocean, growing gills and playing with the water reflecting on her skin. This is a nod to her heritage, referencing the Māori myth, Pania and The Reef.
“This track and video unlocks a whole new world I have been so excited to share with everyone, I’ve drawn so much inspiration from looking within myself the past year and the parts of me that feel the most genuine.” - Riiki Reid
Riiki Reid performed as Riiki in the Flying Nun Record Store in Wellington in 2021, as part of our What Was That Thing? series. We are excited to follow along this exciting new chapter in her music career.
