Alice In Chains are the godfathers of angsty, sludgy, alternative metal that never forget their Black Sabbath roots and their first real emergence onto the scene, for most people, was their 1990 debut full-length Facelift.
Though it clearly lays the groundwork for the dark, tortured Alice in Chains that would be on full display on their 1992 magnum opus Dirt, this album pays homage to the band's glam rock roots, featuring more melodic, upbeat tracks than usual. This combination of catchy yet heavy and a bit on the darker side would lead to the success of its breakout single, "Man in the Box".
