Much has changed since Tame Impala first emerged with an EP of dusty home recordings in 2008. Currents, released in 2015, was a bold pivot for Kevin Parker, the Australian multi-instrumentalist from Perth who had built his reputation on psychedelic rock. With Currents, Parker shifted away from the guitar-driven sound of previous albums into a more polished, synth-heavy exploration. Self-produced and recorded almost entirely by Parker in isolation, the album explores themes of change, desire, and self-identity. Tracks like “Let It Happen” and “The Less I Know the Better” blend shimmering production, marking a significant departure from the hazy psych-rock of Lonerism.
