Lard was the unholy alliance of Jello Biafra and members of Ministry, launched with the scorched-earth 1989 EP Power of Lard. Combining Biafra’s unmistakable vocals and razor-sharp satire with Ministry’s pummelling industrial-metal rhythm section, this debut bridges thrash, punk, and death rock in gloriously unfiltered fashion.

The title track is a full-force industrial punk blast, while ‘Hellfudge’ crashes through like a deranged mix of Flipper and Jerry Lee Lewis, taking aim at televangelist hypocrisy. The 30-minute closer ‘Time to Melt’ stretches into droning, dirge-like territory, channelling the experimental edge of John Cale and early death rock.

Loud, abrasive, and fiercely political, this is Biafra’s first post-Dead Kennedys release—and it still hits like a sucker punch.

Long out of print and now reissued, Power of Lard is essential listening for fans of Dead Kennedys, Ministry, Pailhead, Flipper, and boundary-pushing punk.
