Craven Faults - Sidings (Vinyl)
The enigmatic UK electronic artist, Craven Faults, returns with Sidings, following 2020 debut Erratics & Unconformities and 2023’s Standers This release, the third double album in an ongoing series of long-form analogue meditations on the north of England, expands the project’s intricate topography of landscape and machine, tracing the quiet persistence of time and human endeavour.
These long-form releases have each been punctuated with shorter single disc albums – Enclosures at the end of 2020 and Bounds in 2024. Each release builds on Craven Faults’ lore and takes a unique view of the north of England through the spectrum of slowly unfurling analogue electronic music, adding new layers to a distinctive mythology, channelling global currents in experimental music through a distinctly northern lens.
Sidings continues that exploration — from the echoes of post-industrial architecture to the resonances of classic studios between Los Angeles and Rochdale, 1952 to 1980, tracing journeys through the post-industrial landscape outside the old mill Craven Faults calls home. The devil’s in the details. It always was and it always will be. It’s there for those who seek it out.
Its journey begins in an isolated community formed around a monumental feat of engineering — fourteen tunnels and twenty-two viaducts carved to open up the north — and ends in a single enclosed field on the moor in 1858. A record about routes and residues, Sidings finds meaning in infrastructure, in repetition, and in the hidden detail that rewards patient listening.
