Mike Hall - Nothing Stands Still (Vinyl)
Mike Hall has been a mainstay of the Aotearoa music community since his hardcore punk days in the 1990s as lead singer of Balance through permanent positions as bassist for The Brunettes, Dimming, Tami Neilson and much more, in parallel with his decades of work as a core member of Pluto.
Spurred into action by a late-night car break-in/missing hard drive disaster and subsequent encouragement from the producer Jol Mulholland — who “pointed out that no one would ever hear the material, right? Challenge laid down”.
Nothing Stands Still is Hall’s debut solo album, on which he reinterprets and reinvents seven years of lost recordings (!) in the form of a nine-track album that will be released in its entirety on August 16.
Hall sounds like a long-lost member of the Finn family with a Beatles-esque spring in his step, delivering the dizzy melodies and snappy guitars of the lead single ‘Stop Dragging Me Around‘. Also featuring instrumental contributions from Mulholland (who “played most of the guitars and drums”), Brett Adams, Matthias Jordan and Alistair Deverick.
“Hall’s ambitions for this record? Just to get it out into the world so that something good can come out of that stolen hard drive in 2018. So, cheers to the car thieves! But if you ever want to return the hard drive, maybe there could be a second album.”
Tracklist:
Side A
01 Can You Get Me Out
02 Everything
03 Goodwill
04 Stop Dragging Me Around
05 The Sun Never Came Up
Side B
01 Shortest Straw
02 Warning Shot
