Freak Slug - Amulet (Vinyl)
Manchester's rising indie star Freak Slug returns with her highly anticipated sophomore album 'Amulet'. Following the success of her critically acclaimed debut album I Blow Out Big Candles, Amulet marks an evolution in her sound, leaning into a more raw sonic palette while showcasing her growth as a songwriter and musician. Digging into a past life uncovered in spiritual reading, Amulet plants one foot in the past and another in the present – set against a medieval landscape of religious tyranny against women (“Big Boy”) while showing the butterfly effect that continues to have on contemporary society (“Black Eyes”), romantic relationships (“Jade Green”), and feminine identity (“Wishing Bone”). Written over a series of sessions in London and L.A. with long-time collaborator Dylan Neustadter, Amulet melds slacker alt rock songwriting with sharp lyricism, her sedated vocals propelled by driving bass lines, bouncy drums and washed-out guitars that land somewhere between The Breeders and the The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Melding saccharine vocals with a cutting attitude, earworm melodies with more hard-nose influences, deeply felt emotions with songwriting so intuitive it feels almost effortless, Amulet expertly harnesses Freak Slug’s contrasts into an album that feels both incandescent and dreamlike.
