Mali Mali - ‘Psychic Acorns’ (Vinyl)
Tāmaki Makaurau music maker Mali Mali (Ben Tolich) returns with Psychic Acorns, his sixth full-length album, a sparse but sprawling sixteen-track double LP arriving this Friday 30 October. Psychic Acorns was made with a deliberately small circle of collaborators, with Ben playing piano, voice, guitar, and Native American flute himself.
Alex Freer (Tiny Ruins) provided drums and percussion using an assortment of hand drums, toms and rattling objects rather than a conventional drum kit. Its visual identity was similarly hands-on, combining photographs taken atop Mt Taranaki and at home with hand-painted lettering and artwork developed with longtime collaborator Laban Cole. A strictly limited edition of one hundred copies has been pressed to black and white marbled double LP, each including a special photograph and notes and stories about the making of the album.
