Gut Health - Stiletto (Vinyl)
Gut Health are a six-piece ensemble from Naarm/Melbourne whose sound blurs the boundaries of guitar music, weaving hypnotic dance-punk, no wave and chaotic noise with nightclub-inspired soundscapes.
Songs flicker between atonality and melodicism, while expanding into engulfing, kaleidoscopic soundscapes, reinforced by a groove-heavy rhythm section that reflects the diverse musical backgrounds of each player.
Gut Health’s 2022 debut EP, Electric Party Chrome Girl (EPCG), self-recorded in a storage facility in the heart of Brunswick, was initially an exercise in sonic exploration. Originally designed as a collection of demos, the band were satisfied with the raw quality of the recordings and decided to mark it as their first body of work. It was released locally via Marthouse Records and mixed and mastered by Simon Maisch.
Their debut full-length offering Stiletto arrived in late 2024. Out via Highly Contagious and AWAL Recordings, Gut Health’s debut is an immersive ten-track foray, with songs oscillating between hypnosis and noise, edging precariously toward collapse yet maintaining Gut Health’s sense of danceability.
Recorded with long-term collaborator Julian Cue and Gut Health’s Dom Willmott at Button Pusher Studios and APAX Warehouse in Preston, produced by Dom Willmott and bandmate Adam Markmann, and mixed by Portland’s Evan Mersky (Lithics) on a 24-track reel-to-reel tape machine, Stiletto builds upon EPCG’s scaffolding, offering a more realised and expansive exploration of Gut Health’s musical core.
The central elements of Gut Health’s music - chaotic verses juxtaposed with danceable rhythms and melodicism remain – but Stiletto encapsulates a vaster sense of depth and dimension.
