Home Brew, Aotearoa New Zealand hip-hop group
Home Brew are a hip-hop group from Auckland, New Zealand, founded by rapper Tom Scott, producer Haz Beats, and bassist/co-producer Lui Tuiasau. Formed in the late 2000s, the group gained recognition with their debut self-titled album, Home Brew, released in 2012. The album reached number one on the New Zealand charts, offering a mix of social commentary and personal reflection, characteristic of the group's style. Their music often addresses issues such as mental health, addiction, and societal pressures, blending humor and vulnerability with their beats and lyrics. Though the group’s output is limited, their influence on the New Zealand music scene remains significant.
Tom Scott, beyond his work with Home Brew, has been involved in several other musical projects. He is the frontman of the jazz-influenced band Avantdale Bowling Club, whose self-titled debut album won the 2019 Taite Music Prize. Scott's work also extends to @Peace, a collaboration with fellow rapper Lui Tuiasau and producer Christoph El Truento, releasing multiple albums and EPs. His projects often explore complex themes of identity, politics, and personal struggle, cementing his reputation as one of New Zealand's leading voices in hip-hop.
In 2023 Home Brew reissued their self-titled album from 2012 and also released a new album called Run it Back.
Both albums are released on their own record label called Years Gone By - when available we stock these records on vinyl and CD in all the Flying Nun record stores - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
