Florence & the Machine - Lungs (Vinyl)
Florence & the Machine's 2009 debut album, 'Lungs', held the number-two position for five weeks on the UK albums chart before reaching number one, after being on the chart for twenty-eight consecutive weeks. By 2010 the album had been in the UK top forty for 65 consecutive weeks, making it one of the best-selling albums of 2009/10 and winning the Brit Award for Best British Album in 2010.
An intense young woman who read a lot of Edgar Allan Poe, as a child, Florence specialises in dark, gothic imagery - werewolves, wedding dresses, bleeding hearts and coffins - and quirky tunes that start quietly and build into big, soaring climaxes. The songs are generally highly emotionally charged, with an undercurrent of violence and/or animal passion, with a nagging hook to keep the listener engaged. When Florence falls in love, you gather, she really falls, and when it's over, the only recourse is pain, rage and vast quantities of alcohol. The single 'Rabbit Heart' was written after her label asked her for something more upbeat, and were provided with a tune with a typically jaunty chorus about animal sacrifice: "This is the gift/ It comes with a price/ Who is the lamb/And who is the knife?".
Florence & the Machine have released five albums since this debut and are now festival headliners worldwide.
This is the 2015 re-issue with a gatefold cover.
