1970's Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow is Funkadelic’s most rock-influenced album. Though much of the group’s early work has definite rock sensibilities, especially Funkadelic, released earlier that year, Free Your Mind could be considered one of the 10 best rock albums released in 1970.

The project, helmed by the visionary George Clinton, is a messy mix of hard rock and hardcore funk. But even with all of its jagged edges, the album is an artistic triumph. It wouldn’t be correct to say that Funkadelic never got this weird again, but they certainly never got this weird in this particular way again.

Funkadelic would find new and interesting ways to be strange over the next decade or so, but Free Your Mind… And Your Ass Will Follow is still a unique achievement. It’s one of the best examples of capturing unbridled anarchy and channeling it into something musically transcendent.
