L7 – Smell The Magic

2020 was the 30th anniversary of L7's second album, 'Smell the Magic', which was released on Sub Pop and is now celebrated as a breakthrough 'feminist rock' album. This is when L7 began to find the sense of melody to complement their distorted punk guitar assault. The band became infamous for the 'Reading Festival tampon lobbing incident' and for guitarist/vocalist Donita Sparks fanny-flashing TV performances.

'Smell the Magic' was one of the fiercest, heaviest most punk rock record many US fans had heard....and, arguably, it still is. The fabulous "Fast and Frightening" is a ripping anthem, "Shove" pleads the case for mosh pit etiquette, while "Just Like Me" demands equal rights (and vices) for male and female rock stars. "Till the Wheels Fall Off" is another standout, thanks to its relentless descending riff, and points the way toward the band's breakthrough album, 'Bricks Are Heavy'.
