Molchat Doma - Etazhi (Vinyl)
Молчат дома [Molchat doma] is a post-punk and coldwave band from the Eastern European country of Belarus.
As the genre of coldwave suggests, Etazhi comes off as very cold and dark with a drum machine like a robotic sequenced box as opposed to mimicking any sort of live drum and guitars and bass that hearken back to early post-punk influences like Joy Division, New Order, and Bauhaus. However, what stands out as being uniquely Eastern European are the vocals.
While several post punk bands are known for their deep brooding vocals, they rarely achieve the effect of a haunted WWII era bunker in the dead of Winter.
This sort of vocal style has several roots in the post-punk and new wave that existed within the Soviet Union throughout the 1980s. Bands like Кино, Звуки Му, and Николай Коперник used the tradition of deep male Russian vocals to great affect to create darker soundscapes and moods.
Songs like Toska and Kommersanty sound straight out of the golden era of Soviet Post-Punk, but remastered for the 21st century.
