Purple Mountains – Purple Mountains (Vinyl)
After releasing Silver Jews’ sixth album, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea, David Berman said that he was done making music, but he returned in 2019 with a new group, Purple Mountains, who's one album was released very shortly before Berman died.
Where Silver Jews’ indie rock trended towards country and folk music, Purple Mountains pulls in classic rock tropes. What’s more interesting is the greater attention paid to atmosphere. On Silver Jews records, the instruments sound unaltered, while those on Purple Mountains, such as the female vocal loop in the background of “Darkness and Cold”, is just unnatural enough to alert us that a computer was at least partially responsible for that noise.
On any Berman record, the lyrics are the most important part, and here they’re still sad. This is an album with a song called “All My Happiness is Gone” and there are no pretenses of positivity, which may offer some context for the artist's sad demise very soon after this record was released.
