The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a concept album by David Bowie, released in 1972. The album tells the story of Ziggy Stardust, a fictional androgynous rock star who serves as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings, culminating in his eventual downfall. The narrative explores themes of fame, identity, and apocalypse. The Spiders from Mars, Bowie's backing band for the album, included Mick Ronson on guitar, Trevor Bolder on bass, and Mick Woodmansey on drums. Ziggy Stardust became a critical and commercial success, significantly elevating Bowie's status in popular music. The album has been retrospectively praised and frequently appears on lists of the greatest albums of all time. 

David Bowie laid to rest the Ziggy Stardust persona in July 1973 at his infamous last show with the Spiders From Mars at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, but Ziggy’s impact reverberates to this day.
